Core Competencies and Training Project
Course Description
Through the generous support of the MCCSS OAP Workforce Capacity Building Initiative Grant, WM+A has developed a Core Competencies Training Program designed to strengthen the skills of direct support workers and Instructor Therapists delivering ABA services under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Our Steering Committee, along with results from provincial key informant interviews and a province-wide survey, provided valuable insights. These insights have been instrumental in shaping the project tools and training resources developed.  We learned that core competencies are vital for direct support workers. These skills enhance technical abilities, positively impact outcomes for children, youth, and families, and help providers excel in their roles. They also ensure that services align with organizational goals. Based on community feedback, we have built the OAP Workforce Core Competencies Toolkit, Training Modules, and Resource Library.
What are Core Competencies?
Core competencies are the foundational skills that support every part of your role. They go beyond technical training and focus on how you show up, solve problems, adapt to change, and connect with others. This course focuses on four key areas: communication, adaptability, problem-solving and critical thinking, and a positive attitude with initiative and engagement.
